I don’t know about you all, but I am definitely willing to attribute the Giant’s extra inning win Monday night to the stellar performance of our National Anthem by our instrumental music students and their singing companions. Arriving promptly at 6:15, with saxophones, tubas, clarinets, violins and drums in hand, our students assembled under the portico behind right field. With 45 minutes till show time, musicians tuned their instruments, cracked jokes, and fidgeted with nervous anticipation. Christine Rasmussen, Borel Music Director, led them in one last rehearsal – and then it was time.
The gates to the field were flung open and out we marched in three loosely configured rows, out to the microphones standing right behind second base. Trumpets gave the starting note, and then, with a raise of the baton, the familiar strains of the Star Spangled Banner drifted through the warm night air. From my vantage point, they hit every note perfectly! And then it was over. We all marched off the field, catching a glimpse of ourselves on the big screen behind us. A quick scramble to find instrument cases, connect with parents, put on warmer clothing and head up to our section, way on the other side of the park. Filling several sections, with 800 strong, our students, teachers, parents and friends ate their fill of garlic fries, pizza and cotton candy, watched Omar Vizquel muscle in a rare home run, and raised close to $7,000 for our schools.
Much appreciation to Christine for organizing, rehearsing, and chaperoning our musicians. And thanks to all the parents who brought their children with their instruments (one clever mother had a hand truck for her son’s tuba!), waited patiently outside the assembly barrier, and trekked all the way up to View Reserve. To Kip Parent, our tireless board president, for undertaking event and auction coordination for the third year. And to Kathy Joyce, our incredible Administrative Assistant, for her impeccable organizational skills and consistent good humor. And, just like our intrepid boys of orange and black, we’ll have another chance to do it all again next year.
