The San Mateo-Foster City School District includes 20 schools serving more than 10,000 K-8 public school students in San Mateo and Foster City. The district is one of the largest in San Mateo County yet receives one of the lowest per pupil funding allocations. Since 2007 the San Mateo – Foster City School District has already absorbed $18 million in cuts. The district is very thankful that the San Mateo and Foster City communities recently passed Measure A which will provide a revenue stream of $6 million for the next seven years. Unfortunately, due to continuing cuts related to the State budget crisis, the district still faces $4.2 million in budget reductions in 2010-2011. These severe budget cuts make the foundation’s support more critical than ever.
Since 1989 for kids! has provided supplemental funding to the San Mateo-Foster City School District to support programs including school libraries, music and student counseling services. Last September for kids! celebrated its 20th anniversary having donated more than $2.8 million to the district since 1989. Funds are raised from individual donors, corporate and community foundations, special events and employee matching funds from local companies.
